ROLLER DERVICHES (creation 2024)

Roller Derviches is a hypnotic wandering performance recreated in each host city with about fifteen roller derby players, an on-skates in situ parade connecting various public spaces frequently inhabited by skaters. connecting various public spaces frequently inhabited by skaters.

Preparatory workshops aim to introduce the team of skatersto tools of contemporary dance, starting from a lexicon of the most common gestures in roller derby to gradually lead them towards dance and its spatial arrangement: work on the constrained body, exploration of different states and qualities of movement (fluid, fragmented, jerky), variation of speeds and tempos, notions of balance/imbalance, falls, lifts, jumps. Thus, while retaining the fundamental principles and overall aesthetics of roller derby, the goal is to coexist contact sport and contact dance.

ROLLER DERVICHES can be considered as an ancillary project or the docu-fiction counterpart of ROLL, just as TWIRL, a conference-performance on majorettes, was for IMAGO-GO. Indeed, while in her group choreographic creations, Marta Izquierdo always approaches the figures she works on through fiction (majorettes, cheikhat, guerrilla warriors, skaters), she frequently proposes parallel projects that make visible the reality that nourishes these pieces.
